Lectures
Spirit in Music: The Practice of Active Listening  With Rodrigo Tarraza From the earliest days, music provided a source of solace to uplift the spirit and transcend the troubles of everyday life. As time progressed, and spirituality, culture, and consciousness evolved, music has evolved with it. In this presentation Rodrigo Tarraza takes us from the middle ages through the 21. century and gives examples of higher consciousness in different musical styles throughout history. Rodrigo will take you deeper with practical insights of how and what to listen for in the experience of spirit through music.

Music and Numerology: Is Music a matter of numbers?
With Christine Gevert Music is a human pastime around which people design an important part of their emotional lives. Listening to music has historically made people feel free and let us revel in our subjectivity. But music is also mathematics! This talk explores this fascinating apparent contradiction through subjects such as: Pythagoras' discovery of the overtones; the Golden Section in Music illustrated in Bach's, Mozart's and Beethoven's works; Mattheson's interval characteristics; and modern Algorithmic Composition.

A visionary woman and her legacy: Wanda Landowska  With Christine Gevert
Wanda Landowska was not only a legendary harpsichordist, but also a woman at the forefront of the cultural and political elite of her times, who dared to follow her own vision. At the beginning of the 20. century she brought the harpsichord back from oblivion by reviving the instrument and its long forgotten repertoire. But she didn't stop there: she related to contemporary musicians such as Poulenc and de Falla, who wrote large scale pieces for “her” instrument. This world wide renowned concert and recording artist, feminist figure and writer relocated to New England after losing everything during World War II. The talk presents her story, her music and her thoughts on music, culture, society and human relationships.

Practical Sessions - How does it work?
Musical Instruments explained. Soloists show their own instruments by giving a clear and concise description of their origins, their mechanics and particularities about the way that they produce the sound. Recorded and played sound examples bring the concepts alive and show the historical context and repertoire typical for the instruments. A “hands on” session in which participants get to come close to the instruments, touch, hear and understand them. Visually this is also supported by a projection of detailed images of the interior and exterior of the instruments.

The Harpsichord
-With Christine Gevert. Learn about the mechanics of the instrument with an informative projection and at an Italian Harpsichord after Giovanni Battista Giusti (1681).

The Organ With Christine Gevert. At the historic Johnson Organ of the Spectrum Playhouse.
